Sami's Beary Fun English Class #2
Today we are going to learn more about grammar(;
Congratulations to Miranda who got the question right in my first class.
Okay, so we all know when the teacher says "Everyone put their pencils down."
Is this grammatically correct? If it's not correct, tell me what you think would be correct. Remember, this sentence could still be correct. I will reveal the answer after 4 answers

Well, if it is an imperative sentence, I believe it is incorrect. I think this because in my opinion, the teacher would say: "Everyone, put your pencils down."

My teacher(s) usually would say something along the line of: Everyone, put your pencils down.

I agree with Miranda. I think this is incorrect because the teacher is saying it to the students, and in a way, it would be like such as: Everyone, put your pencils down. (as miranda had stated)

Re: Sami's Beary Fun English Class #2
It is in fact incorrect.
Congrats to Myra, Maddie, and Moona!
Although, "Everyone, put your pencils down." is not correct either.
First, the reason it isn't "Everyone put their pencils down" is because their would mean they share the pencil, and not that everyone has their own pencil. In saying that, "Everyone put down their own pencil." would be grammatically correct. Also, if the classmates were all of the same gender, "Everyone put down his pencil." could also be used, same for females.
Although, if the classmates are of different genders the correct sentence should be "Everyone put down his or her pencil." That way there is only one pencil assigned to each person and it has both genders incorporated into the sentence.
Now, on to why "Everyone, put your pencils down." is not correct. The reason this is not correct is because your is plural. Pencils is not plural in this sentence, it would be plural as pencil. Your can still not be used because the gender is not said. Heres an example;
Incorrect: Everyone put your pencils down.
Correct: All boys in the room, put your pencils down.
Thanks for playing!(:
